DEALING WITH THE DEBT COLLECTORSHaringey Solidarity Group and Haringey Anti-Poverty Initiative hold regular pickets of Brighthouse. Why? See the article below. If you would like to join us, get in touch by emailing debt[AT]haringey.org.uk. BRIGHTHOUSE - BEWARE OF SHARKS!!Got no money? Bad credit rating? Then Brighthouse wants you to sell them your soul (well, almost)... A rip-off For many of us, Brighthouse seems like one of the only places we can actually buy certain household items. But this often means being badly ripped off and lumbered with debts for years, paying a ridiculously high interest rate (almost 30% in many cases). You end up paying several times the actual value of whatever it is you've bought!Intimidation If you should miss an instalment, you get a hefty fine on top of being ripped off. Worse, if you're not quick enough in paying their extortionate prices, they'll send the bailiffs round to intimidate you and try to seize the goods back. They don't care about your circumstances - that you've lost your job, or that you've got kids, that this is outrageous or causing family stress etc.Opposition This vile practice of exploiting the most financially vulnerable has not gone unchallenged: in Birmingham, Manchester, and Southampton residents have taken direct action against bailiffs employed by Brighthouse, and similar companies; and it was even kicked out of France for unethical practices! It’s a target of the "Debt on Our Doorstep" Campaign (www.debt-on-our-doorstep.com).Many people find ways to avoid paying. Most people just boycott such rip-off places, or look for alternative sources for what they need. But it’s not just Brighthouse – cancel all debt! Hardship and debts of all kinds affect most of us. |
