An extremely angry protest of 300 local residents, trade unionists and representatives of community groups left councillors in no doubt as to how much opposition their cuts programme will face.

Demonstrators occupied the council chamber and held their own people's budget meeting before they were forcibly, and often violently, removed by riot police, who physically assaulted a number of protestors, arresting two.

Demonstrators were furious at the Labour Council's imposition of £87 million in cuts which will have a devastating effect on communities in one of the country's most deprived boroughs.
