The Spurs Ground Development is not just about a new stadium. It also involves the building of new housing, a supermarket, luxury hotel and more. It’s happening on our doorstep and will affect our lives: - who will our new neighbours? - for anyone living in temporary accommodation, maybe you're hoping to move into one of the flats one day. - how will it affect local services, businesses and crime? - We need to have our say at the Development Management Forum Thursay 24 June, 7pm, at Haringey Sixth Form Centre, White Hart Lane (just off Tottenham High Road), N17. |

We spent the month before the general election enthusiastically distributing the latest "anti-election" issue of our newsletter. With street stalls every weekend, tube station distributions and door-to-door delivery, we handed out all 5,000 copies of the Totally Indypendent in just over four weeks. A lot of us in HSG have been madly busy helping organise for Haringey Independence Day, which was on Saturday 30 May and was a day of "independence from party politics, religion and government agencies, where individuals and groups in Haringey can organise collectively, exchange ideas and make their own decisions that affect their lives". A report will be going up on the Haringey Independence Day website soon. But in the meantime, check out the report on London Indymedia. |

The coming election is supposed to be our big opportunity to "exercise our democratic freedom" by voting for the next government. But general elections only happen about every five years. So if we live until we’re 70 years old, we’ll only get to "exercise our democratic freedom" about ten times in a lifetime. When we vote, we vote for someone we've probably never met, who tells us, with absolute sincerity, that they know what is best for us. Last week, Haringey Solidarity Group took action with M, a Haringey mother, facing eviction from a private tenancy. The council had finally agreed to house her, but would not do so until she had been physically evicted. M just wanted a few days' notice to make arrangements, and to put her mind at rest.

Postal workers, including all those in Haringey, are defending their wages and conditions, defending the Post Office as a public service against privatisation, and defending the right of workers to organise in the face of management bullying and efforts to break the Union. Royal Mail, the Government and most of the media were on the offensive against postal workers despite enormous public support for the strikers. This has provoked a national strike, which postal workers by a massive majority voted to back. |

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders, an estimated 75,000 homes will be repossessed this year, three tim es more than 2007, and nearly twice as many as last year. The current financial crisis has led to people being laid off work, making them vulnerable to repossession orders due to them struggling to keep up with mortgage repayments. |
