HSG Natwest Bank Protest: Report
HSG Natwest Bank Protest: Report Print E-mail

On Saturday 1st August, Haringey Solidarity Group organised a protest outside the Natwest Bank in Wood Green.

NatWest and Lloyds Banking Group have been bailed out with £70bn of our money, and it’s reckoned that the overall cost of propping up the banking system will be £130bn –that's almost £5,000 for every household in Britain.

But go down to Edmonton County Court on a Thursday and you'll find the same high street banks queuing up to get Repossession Orders – in effect, throwing families out on the street just because they can't pay their mortgages.

So, a group of us spent a couple of hours outside the Wood Green bank, handing out leaflets and talking to shoppers about what we can all do to resist repossessions. We had a large banner covering the front of the bank for about an hour, until the Area Manager turned up and asked us, completely straight-faced, whether we had permission to put it there.  We stayed another hour, and served a Notice to Quit Repossessions on the bank manager as a parting note.

The protest was part of our repossessions action campaign, which is getting the message out to people who are facing problems with their mortgage that it is possible to defend and avoid repossession proceedings.
