Haringey Independence Day 2008 Notes on final feedback
and networking session

Positives

Improvements

Networking between groups

· building links (and finding common points of interest) between groups

· diverse range of groups

More diverse range of groups needed, e.g. from black and minority ethnic groups and young people

Involve schools (e.g. to encourage young people to come along)

More publicity needed

·         earlier
·         better use of places to publicise (cafes, community centres)

Not clear enough in publicity that event was not run by the Council.

Encouraging involvement from individuals

· building links between groups and individuals

interesting range of issue from the different groups

More, and diverse, range of people needed, e.g. from black and minority ethnic groups and young people

Involve schools (e.g. to encourage young people to come along)

Community

· encouraging community cohesion through use of community building

local connections (e.g. in the film programme)

·  Location

· good use of a community building

good location

Music enjoyable

Good food

Have stalls outside (if the weather is good)

Fully wheelchair accessible

Better signposting (especially round the back of the venue)

Inspiring

What else can be done to increase radical self-organised
activity in Haringey?

Idea

How to make it happen

Improve communication between groups

use other languages in our literature (not just English)

Have a resource centre

Encourage residents associations in every area

Set up an activist network

have regular networking meetings/another conference

invite other groups to existing events (rather than plan a separate event)

Allow organic development, build on what there is

Aim to spread/share responsibility – different groups to host each meeting

Have a directory of groups active in the borough

use existing directory from the event, but write a few lines about each group

All groups to copy such a page on to their website, or link to it

Have practical workshops to develop skills and capacity (e.g. media training, facilitating meetings)

Encourage groups to go to these workshops at events that are already being organised

Have an annual gathering (like this one)

Invite all this year’s attendees to first organising meeting and to help organise

Better use of community focal points to publicise what we do

Organise around natural communities (Haringey an unnatural entity), ignore council borders

Have a website portal for all groups in Haringey, internet-based newspaper (see Minca?), internet calendar of events (e.g. google calendar)

possibly use/expand HAVCO’s site
